For your next Christmas party, bake up this show-stopping Nutella Christmas Tree! This will be the ultimate dessert centerpiece for your holiday feast.
Creating a Vegan Nutella Christmas Tree is a fun activity that can be shared with family and friends this December. Imagine a flaky puff pastry shaped into a Christmas tree, generously slathered with a luscious layer of chocolate hazelnut spread. The layers of pastry create a tree-like effect, and when baked to golden perfection, it becomes a stunning and delicious addition to your Christmas table.
Not only is it beautiful, but the aroma of the pastry baking in the oven fills the kitchen with the warm and comforting scents of hazelnut and chocolate, heightening the anticipation of Christmas.
Once the Nutella Christmas Tree emerges from the oven, it can be further adorned with festive touches. Dusting the tree with powdered sugar mimics the appearance of freshly fallen snow, while colorful sprinkles or edible decorations add a cheerful and whimsical touch.
The BEST Vegan Nutella
Before we dive into the recipe, let’s take a moment to appreciate the star of the show – Vegan Nutella. If you’re vegan or dairy-free, you can still enjoy this delicious hazelnut chocolate spread. My favorite store-bought one is Rigoni Organic Dairy Free Nocciolata Classic Hazelnut Spread (not sponsored).
I know this is technically not real “Nutella”, but it tastes very similar. In this blog post, I will refer to this chocolate hazelnut spread as Nutella in case anyone is confused.
If you can’t find Vegan Nutella near you, make a homemade version. The Vegan 8 has a delicious recipe: Easy Vegan Nutella (5 Minutes!).
Nutella Christmas Tree Ingredients:
- Puff Pastry Sheets: Make sure to let the puff pastry sheets thaw before you start. The Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry dough is accidentally vegan. If you’re vegan and can’t find this brand, make sure to check the ingredients for butter/dairy.
- Vegan Nutella Spread
- Melted Vegan Butter
- Cinnamon: I recommend Ceylon cinnamon. It’s often called “true cinnamon” because it has a delicate, slightly sweet flavor that makes it perfect for enhancing both sweet and savory dishes. It also contains lower levels of coumarin compared to Cassia cinnamon, making it a safer choice for regular use.
- Powdered Sugar: Dusting it with powdered sugar mimics a snowy effect, creating a winter wonderland on your dessert table.
Utensils:
- Baking Sheet
- Parchment Paper
- Pizza Cutter or Sharp Knife
- Star-Shaped Cutter
How to make a Nutella Christmas Tree:
- Preheat the oven to 375 F (190C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Unroll one of the thawed puff pastry sheets and place it on the baking sheet.
- Spread the vegan Nutella evenly onto the puff pastry sheet. Unroll the second puff pastry sheet and place on top.
- Using a knife or a pizza cutter, cut the layered pastry sheets into the shape of a Christmas tree (refer to the images and video above for a visual guide).
- Use a Star-Shaped Cutter to cut out stars for decoration from the excess (optional). Then pull away the spare pastry.
- Cut strips along the sides of the puff pastry tree, leaving the center uncut. This will create the branches.
- Twist each branch a couple of times (all in the same direction). Place a pastry star at the top of the tree and some down the side. Brush the tree with melted vegan butter and sprinkle some cinnamon on top.
- Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until risen and golden brown.
- Transfer to a serving board, and dust with powdered sugar. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty of your creation before pulling apart the branches or slicing into it. The first cut reveals the intricate layers of pastry and Nutella, making it even more tempting.
- Enjoy and Merry Christmas!
Customizing Your Christmas Creation:
Part of the charm of the Puff Pastry Christmas Tree lies in its versatility. While the suggested recipe is a fantastic starting point, feel free to unleash your creativity and customize the tree to match your preferences. Experiment with different shapes, sizes, and decorations. Consider adding crushed nuts for extra crunch or drizzling vegan chocolate over the finished tree for a decadent touch. Personalizing your Nutella Christmas Tree allows you to tailor it to your taste and make it a unique centerpiece for your holiday table.
One of the most beautiful aspects of the holiday season is the joy of sharing, and this Vegan Nutella Christmas Tree is the perfect creation to spread that joy far and wide. Whether you’re hosting a festive gathering, a family dinner, or a virtual celebration, sharing slices of this delightful dessert with loved ones is a gesture that encapsulates the spirit of the holidays.
Consider packaging individual slices in festive boxes or wrapping them in decorative parchment paper for a thoughtful and edible gift. This Nutella Christmas Tree isn’t just a dessert; it’s a token of festive warmth and culinary creativity you can share with friends, neighbors, and coworkers.
My boyfriend and I shared this after dinner one night while watching Christmas movies and it was lovely! I’d love to hear in the comments how you’re going to enjoy this treat.

Creating a dessert spread with these treats adds a delightful touch to your holiday celebrations, ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
