Vegan Caramel Sauce

Cooks in 15 minutes Difficulty Easy

You’re 4 ingredients away from making this delicious homemade vegan caramel. Easy to make and it’s perfect with ice cream, apples, cake, and iced coffee.

This vegan caramel sauce is sweet, sticky, buttery, and it’s phenomenal with anything. One taste and you’ll be hooked! A candy thermometer is not required. You just need a saucepan, cane sugar, vegan butter, vegan heavy cream, and some flaky salt.

I have yet to find a vegan caramel sauce at the grocery store, so I make it at home instead! It’s honestly so much better this way, and it’s a lot easier to make than you’d think. Whether you’ve been cooking for a while or are a beginner in the kitchen, you can easily make this caramel sauce. The main rule is you have to stand next to the pan the entire time whisking it so the sugar doesn’t burn.

Salted Caramel Sauce Ingredients:

  • 1 cup organic cane sugar – Always buy organic sugar if you are vegan because the non-organic ones are not.
  • 6 tablespoons softened vegan butter – Make sure the butter is soft before adding it to the hot sugar. I recommend you set it outside of the fridge for an hour before making this. Earth Balance is the vegan butter I typically use, but use whichever you prefer.
  • 1/2 cup vegan heavy cream (or coconut cream) – The brands Silk and Country Crock has vegan heavy cream options. I have found them at HEB, Kroger, Sprouts, and WholeFoods. If you can’t find them, the next best thing is canned coconut cream.
  • 1 teaspoon flaky salt (optional for salted caramel)

Utensils you will need:

  • High-quality saucepan This will prevent the sugar from sticking and burning to the bottom.
  • Silicone spatula
  • Jar with a lid

How to make caramel:

Set a saucepan to medium heat.

Add 1 cup of sugar and stir it around constantly with a silicone spatula until all the sugar melts and there are no clumps. It can burn very quickly, so keep your eyes on it and make sure to stir non-stop.

Turn off the heat and add in 6 tablespoons of softened vegan butter, 1/2 cup of vegan heavy cream (or coconut cream), and 1 tsp flaky salt. Stir until fully combined and remove from the heat.

Let it cool for 10 minutes, then carefully pour the sauce into a jar with a lid. Transfer it to the fridge after it fully cools down on the counter.

The sauce will thicken up and change color once it’s been refrigerated for a few hours. Serve and pour it over anything your heart desires!

Storage:

Keep it refrigerated in a jar with an airtight lid. It can last in the fridge for up to 1 week (if it can last that long).
